Archaeology Froseda Tole: The status of "Architectural Ensemble" gives

The village of Lin now enjoys a new protection status. Following its recognition as part of a UNESCO protected area, the village has been declared an “architectural ensemble,” an important step that gives legal protection to all of its heritage and characteristic architecture.

Archaeologist Froseda Tole explains that this status places the village under a new legal regime, which prohibits interventions or constructions without respecting the historical and cultural character of the area. Until now, Lin was protected only as part of a UNESCO protected area, but within the village itself there was a lack of a legal basis to preserve any of its traditional elements.

" The "architectural ensemble" status is a legal protection given to the village of Lin because until now it was a protected area, preserved by UNESCO, but within the village there was no legal element to preserve the entire village. "Architectural ensemble" is the entire range of popular housing, which is now preserved by law due to their heritage and history. The main thing is the legal protection that is given to it, which means that if someone had the intention to build there and could justify it with previous laws, now there is no longer any justification to build without respecting the culture, traditions and architecture of the area ," said the archeologist.

According to the archaeologist, the "architectural ensemble" includes all the popular dwellings, which are now protected by law due to the history and heritage they carry. These dwellings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, built mainly of stone, with a characteristic architecture that distinguishes them from other villages on the lake shore.

One of their most unique elements are the balconies, which were once used for drying provisions or fish, but also as a space for communication between residents, a tradition that keeps alive the spirit of the inhabitants of Lin.

" The houses of the village of Lin are from the 18th and 19th centuries, so these are the beginnings of the houses that we see standing. They are mainly built of stone. They have a special feature that many of them are houses that, for example, used the second floor with their balconies to dry provisions, the fish they caught, but also to hold conversations among themselves, something that you don't see in other villages in the lakeshore area. The authentic element is the greatest uniqueness that Lin has, this was the reason that the entire village was included in the UNESCO area ," said archaeologist Tole.

This new status, according to Tole, is also expected to serve as an incentive for new projects that will focus on preserving the authenticity and sustainable development of the village, protecting it from interventions that could violate its unique identity.

" Undoubtedly, this is an additional incentive to approve those projects that have been or will be considered in the future for the village of Lin. It is an additional value, an additional protection given to the village and I am sure that there will be projects that will serve to preserve its authenticity ," said Tole.

This decision comes as a confirmation of the importance that Lin has for the Albanian cultural heritage and as a commitment of the institutions to protect it from uncontrolled interventions that could damage its authenticity. With the new status of “architectural ensemble”, the traditional dwellings, characteristic alleys and old building elements will be preserved as part of a precious asset that testifies to the history and way of life of past generations.

In this way, Lin not only gains legal protection, but also paves the way for sustainable cultural and tourist development, becoming an example of how heritage can be preserved and valued as part of national identity./CNA
