Prime Minister Edi Rama has harshly criticized the Albanian Public Radio and Television (RTSH), questioning the functioning and quality of its service.
Rama said that he personally has not followed public television since 1990 and that he has not received any direct information from the channel.
The Prime Minister stated that he has requested the temporary closure of RTSH, while emphasizing that RTSH must undergo reform before returning to broadcasting.
"We have tried to create the conditions for public television to be reformed and we have failed. I don't know what the new director will do, but so far the balance of public television is a successful failure. Which means from debt to debt and from neglect to neglect.
We have a channel there. Personally, the last time I watched public television was before 1990, before the coup, when they said there were some protests. Since then, I haven't watched them. I went, I gave interviews, but I haven't even watched my own interviews.
You have to be careful, the public television executives all know it, they have never received any message from me because I don't see it. And when one of you sends me a message: 'Look what public television is doing', I am surprised. How do I follow it? But I have met all of them after they were elected.
I only said one thing, shut up. Put it on the screen: 'The Albanian Public Television apologizes to the Albanian people. It apologizes to all the families in the Republic of Albania and abroad, it apologizes to all those who are no longer alive and who have been forced to receive the most miserable public service in the world. We promise you that we will return to the screen when we are ready'. They should reform. How is it possible that other televisions, with more or less budget, achieve more success. Because their budget is not guaranteed. They have to create it every day.
They want the right of the Albanian Football Association to broadcast the National Team's matches because the National Team should be broadcast on public television, but they don't pay the money. Why? You want our money, go to the government. We are not going to give the public television a single lek from the taxes of Albanians, until the public television deserves the taxes of Albanians.
"I think every option should be on the table. Even the final closure, even privatization, even partnership, apart from this one. But I am not participating in this," Rama said./CNA
