MP Bujar Leskaj has reacted to the recent events in Zvërnec, condemning the violence used against protesters and holding Prime Minister Edi Rama responsible for the situation.
Leskaj stated that in a state governed by law, there can be no justification for the use of violence against citizens who protest peacefully.
According to him, the incident cannot be reduced to an excess of authority by some police officers or to communication errors by local police leaders.
He argued that the clashes are a direct consequence of a lack of transparency and misgovernance, accusing the government of creating the conditions for the conflict through legal changes to the law on protected areas.
He stressed that responsibility for the incident cannot be attributed to the residents of the area, the investor or environmental organizations. According to him, the investors operate within the legal framework created by the state, while environmental organizations demand more transparency in decision-making processes.
Leskaj also criticized the measures taken after the incident, calling some of the dismissals in the ranks of the State Police unjustified.
"I strongly condemn the violence used against protesters in Zvërnec. In a state governed by law, there can be no justification for physical attacks. The violence used against peaceful protesters is not simply an act of exceeding authority by 2-3 private police officers, or a statement drafted incorrectly by the leaders of the Vlora Police, but is deeper. It is a direct consequence of the mismanagement of the Rama sect. Rama is the generator of social conflict and lack of transparency. His reactions today seem more like an attempt to justify himself than to be transparent.
Rama must answer to the Albanians for generating the legal changes in the law on protected areas that also brought about the clashes in Zvërnec. He must answer for the consequences that these legal changes and other tailor-made laws have brought on the ground. In the clash on May 30 in Zvërnec, the residents cannot be blamed in any way. But the investor cannot be blamed either, because every economic entity seeks to expand its activity, within the frameworks created by the state and the legal frameworks it has signed. Nor can environmental associations, which demand more transparency, be blamed.
The only culprit is the Rama sect in power, which has caused the state to lack transparency and clear decision-making. With the wave of arrests and dismissals in the Police, the latter of which are completely unreasonable, Rama cannot hide like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand. As a citizen of Vlora, I denounce in this sacred rostrum the position of Greek political and media circles, according to which Zvërnec is inhabited by minorities of Greek nationality. It is very ugly to use a specific event such as the violence in Zvërnec, to support unfounded political or historical claims, which do not correspond to the historical or demographic reality of the area", said Leskaj.
