Events in Zvërnec/Rama: Protests for nature, but who is threatening nature

Prime Minister Edi Rama is in Berat today for the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party. Rama spoke about the debates and reactions to the events in Zvërnec, where he said that when talking about protected areas and nature, the finger cannot be pointed at the Socialist Party and himself.

While commenting on the protest taking place in Tirana on this issue, Rama said that none of the reasons given for the protest are valid. Among other things, he stressed that without increasing the quality of tourism, the Gross National Product or wages cannot increase.

"Talking about protected areas and nature and then turning to the SP and pointing fingers at them is the peak. A peak that only ignorance combined with manipulation can reach. Only malice towards this country can reach it. There is a protest in Tirana to protect nature. But who threatens nature and puts biodiversity at risk? They are protesting that Zvërnec has been removed from the protected area. But who removed it? When was it a protected area and what category was it? Zvërnec has been a category 5 protected area and it will continue to be so.

Protecting biodiversity is part of our work as a government. The debate is not whether that area will be removed or will remain as a protected area. The debate is what kind of Albania we will develop or have in 5 or 10 years. How will we grow Albania economically? Tourism is an industry that is developed by those countries that have respect for nature and the environment. If we think that we will increase the Gross National Product, salaries, without increasing the quality of tourism, we are thinking wrongly", said Rama. /CNA
