Ministry denies Berisha: No pressure on ODIHR for May 11 observation

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs reacted this afternoon regarding the statements made by the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, regarding the interference of internationals in the observation of the May 11, 2025 elections in Albania.

Through a press statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that this is not about interference, much less pressure on them.

Full statement:

Regarding today's claims by the Chairman of the Democratic Party regarding the letter of the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs addressed to international institutions involved in the observation of the May 11, 2025 elections in Albania, we clarify that:

As is clear from the aforementioned letter, this is not about interference in the work of the ODIHR Observer Mission, let alone pressure on them.

It is normal practice in any electoral process for the authorities of the host country to provide the Observation Mission with technical clarifications and context regarding the findings of the preliminary report, which are deemed necessary for consideration in a final report based on facts and evidence.

Even in the case in question, clarifications were presented that were assessed as being able to be taken into account by the rapporteurs when drafting the Final Report. Of course, taking the clarifications into account or not is at the full discretion of the Observation Mission.

We recall that the ODIHR itself has previously reacted that there was no such pressure.

The MEPJ remains committed to respecting the independence and integrity of any monitoring mechanism in accordance with the mandate entrusted to it by the ODIHR. /CNA
