For resistance to dictatorship/ Writer Lekë Tasi honored with title

This Wednesday, writer and former political prisoner Lekë Koço Tasi was honored with an honorary title for his contribution to documenting the past and for human resistance in the face of injustice.

The title was presented to him by the Deputy Mayor of Divjaka Municipality, Silvana Keku, with the motivation: "For resistance and human dignity of the formerly persecuted, as a person active in documenting the past."

The assessment came after the proposal of the Authority for Information on Documents of the former State Security, as part of the commitment to bring to light the unknown stories of the past and honor its witnesses.

The life and work of Lekë Tasi

Lekë Tasi was born on April 15, 1929. He worked as a first cellist in the Radio and Opera Theater Orchestra, where he was dismissed for political reasons in 1967. His father, Koço Tasi, a lawyer by profession, known in the 1920s, had been a Member of the First Albanian Parliament after the Congress of Lushnja. After the June Revolution, he emigrated to Greece for 17 years.

He was arrested and sentenced in a special court in 1945. Uncle Akile Tasi, with a busy political career during the war, and a journalist by profession, died in the prisons of the dictatorship.

Leka was sent to forced labor, and a little later he was interned with his family in Grabjan, Lushnja, 1975-1990. He recounted his life during this period in the autobiographical book "Grabjani trzë kodrave", Tirana, 2009, a primary source of information for future generations on the lives of the internees.

His main activity is painting. Although self-taught, he worked seriously from an early age, copying from nature and learning from the great masters. After his exile in Tirana in 1990, he resumed painting and exhibited in 1992, 2003, 2007, at the National Gallery of Arts, etc.

It continues its active work today to document the crimes and consequences of the dictatorship, as well as working for the social integration of people affected in various ways by the dictatorial system. /CNA
