On January 28, 1936, the great writer Ismail Kadare, poet, prose writer and one of the most prominent representatives of Albanian literature, was born in Gjirokastër. He is considered a central figure in Albanian culture of the second half of the 20th century.

He completed his secondary education in his hometown. In 1958, he graduated from the Department of Language and Literature at the University of Tirana, and then continued his studies for two years at the Gorky Institute in Moscow.

His literary beginnings are mainly related to poetry, with volumes such as “Boyish Inspirations” and “Why Are These Mountains Thought of?” In the field of prose, Kadare produced short stories, novellas, and novels. The novel “The General of the Dead Army” (1963) confirmed him as a great writer.

Other important works of his creativity are: "Chronicle in Stone", "Broken April", "The Chamber of Shame", "Great Pashallëqet e uduri", "Kush e solli Doruntina", as well as many other titles, which have made him the most famous Albanian writer in the world. Ismail Kadare's works have been translated and published in over 45 foreign languages.

Kadare has been honored with numerous awards and decorations. In 2005, he received the international award “The Man Booker International Prize”, one of the most important literary awards in the world. He has also been decorated with the Order of “Honor of the Nation”, the highest state civilian decoration in Albania, as well as by the French government, in 2016, with the “Cross of the Legion of Honor”, ??for his extraordinary contribution to culture and literature.

He passed away on July 1, 2024 in Tirana, at the age of 88.
