On January 6, in the village of Polena in the Municipality of Korça, a special tradition has been preserved for years that marks the start of carnivals, a symbolic celebration related to ancient rituals and the removal of negative energies called "Arapet e Polena". 

This tradition, passed down from generation to generation, represents one of the oldest customs of the area. The inhabitants of Polena, known for their dedication to cultural heritage, dress in traditional costumes made of animal skins, bells and masks, performing ritual scenes according to certain fables.

The tradition has pagan origins and finds similarities with rites developed in several Balkan countries.

Although it was interrupted for decades during the communist system, this celebration was revived after 1990 and continues to be organized every year thanks to the dedication of local residents, mainly young people, who are keeping this over 300-year-old custom alive.

Carnival organizer Gjergji Minka emphasizes that despite the cultural values ??that this tradition carries, institutional support is lacking.

"Since January 1, 1991, we have resumed organizing this celebration. Today marks 36 years. We are among the first in Albania. We prepare all the costumes ourselves, from leather, beads and other elements. We found the tradition this way and we will continue it this way. We have not received any help from the Municipality of Korça, while this celebration is unique in the area and requires more attention," said Minka. 

The ritual known as "The Polena Arabs" continues to be kept alive today, thanks to the remaining inhabitants of this village, remaining a rare testament to the cultural heritage and identity of the area. /CNA
