Epiphany, from religious holiday to popular tradition

On January 6, Epiphany is celebrated by millions of people around the world. It is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, but is barely mentioned in any Gospel, yet it is deeply rooted in secular tradition in Italy and, in Europe, above all a culinary ritual.

The festival is associated with theophany, a word that comes from the Greek theophaneia, and is composed of theos, 'god', and phainein, 'to manifest'.

It is therefore the manifestation of divinity. Another term used in a similar way is Epiphany, from the Greek, epiphaneia, meaning "appearance."

Conventionally, it is a holiday that represents a kind of 'add-on' to Christmas and New Year's, and closes the Christmas season.

In Italy, in fact, schools have always been closed on January 6th (while in other European countries, lessons start earlier and Epiphany is not an official holiday), hence the expression

The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the waters of the Jordan River. Therefore, although Theophany is closely associated with the Christmas holiday, the events commemorated are not part of the Nativity story, as Jesus was assumed to be already in his early thirties at the time of his baptism. /CNA
