Rotunda or Macellum

Today it is one of the symbolic monuments of the city, known to locals as the Torra (Venetian), a circular construction with a diameter of 40 m. Although it is one of the most well-known monuments of Durrës, the rotunda began to be discovered in 1987 by local archaeologist, Afrim Hoti.

In the place where it still stands today, excavations have uncovered the ruins of a market square or covered market from the Byzantine period, with a row of shops and a peristyle of marble columns surrounding a circular courtyard, entered through a single gate, which was closed at night. In the center of the courtyard stood a statue on a marble-tiled plinth.

The intermediate space is paved with limestone slabs arranged radially towards the center. On the eastern side, there are a series of rooms that surround the building in a ring shape, which has led researchers to conclude that we are dealing with a market built most likely during the reign of Emperor Anastasius, who also built the walls surrounding the Byzantine city.

A large number of columns, capitals and architectural pieces, found by chance and exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Durrës, are evidence of magnificent monuments still undiscovered, or buried forever under the concrete and asphalt of today's city.

We invite you to watch the video, which was produced as part of the "Come and get to know my city" project supported by the Municipality of Durrës. /CNA
