The Durrës Amphitheater and the city's antiquity

The most important monument of the city is the amphitheater, the discovery and excavation of which began only in 1966 by the archaeologist of Durrës, Vangjel Toçi. Many years later, after annual expeditions to this monument of special importance not only for Durrës and Albania, but for European civilization, it was put under protection.
It was declared a cultural monument in 1974.

The amphitheater was built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD) and was in use until Emperor Theodosius I (379-395) banned the bloody gladiator games.

The amphitheater's steps rose above the arena to a height of 25 m and had a capacity for 15,000 spectators.

After that, the amphitheater was used as a cemetery and in the 6th century, in one of the western galleries of this monument, a small church was built, which is a monument within the monument for its importance.

We invite you to watch the video, which was produced as part of the "Come and get to know my city" project supported by the Municipality of Durrës.
