Ishmi Castle, a fortress built as a defensive bastion by the Ottomans

Ishmi Castle is one of the important castles in Albania, but it is little known and its visitors are very rare.

But it was built between 1572-1574 and the fortress served as a strategic bastion of Ottoman defense, mainly to control the roads and prevent insurgent activities.

Near the entrance to the Ishmi Castle is the grave of the internationally renowned Albanian painter, Ibrahim Kodra. He passed away in 2006 and was laid to rest in his birthplace, exactly on the plot where his birth house used to be.

The November 2019 earthquake, like many important cultural heritage monuments, damaged this castle. It underwent restoration by the EU4Culture program and today is not only consolidated but also illuminated and accessible to everyone.

We invite you to learn more about the Ishmi Castle through this video, which was produced as part of the "Come and Get to Know My City" project supported by the Municipality of Durrës. /CNA
