Huge fire breaks out off British coast as cargo ship collides with oil tanker

A cargo ship has collided with an oil tanker off the northeast coast of England, causing a large fire and prompting an emergency response by the British coastguard.

The coastguard said it had sent a helicopter and rescue boats from nearby towns, as well as ships with firefighting capabilities, to respond to the incident in the North Sea.

Footage of the incident shows plumes of black smoke surrounding at least one burning ship.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said it had sent four lifeboat crews to respond to the incident and was aware of reports that a number of people had abandoned the boats after a collision and there were fires on both vessels.

At least 32 people have been pulled ashore, according to Martyn Boyers, chief executive of the Port of Grimsby East.

The incident is believed to involve a US-flagged tanker called the Stena Immaculate and a container ship called the Solong, which sails under the flag of Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, according to ship tracking tool VesselFinder. /CNA
