"Let's move decisively towards a strong Europe"/ Emergency EU

Europe is at a crossroads and the decisions of the European Council will guide how to move forward.

This was the political situation in which the European Council met today in Brussels to discuss how EU member states could finance the aforementioned rearmament. They also debated what Europe could do to mitigate the effects of the US withdrawal from Ukrainian support. The Council meeting was also highly anticipated, because it would give a first impression of how united Europe is and will act in the face of the dramatically changed new security situation.

In the case of financing increased defense spending, the EU sent a unified message through planned reforms to the EU's debt and deficit rules, which open up the possibility of an increase of up to 800 billion euros. Countries with particularly high debt and little room for fiscal maneuver, Spain and France, complained that the 150 billion euros provided in EU loans is not enough.

The Council also sent a strong message that they are moving decisively towards a strong and more sovereign European defense and that Europe will support Ukraine with all its capacity. Hungary's absence from this statement allowed the signatories to use more assertive language in the statement and send a signal that Russia is isolated.

MEP Anna Stürgkh stressed in the European Parliament that it is important for Europe to further reduce imports of Russian gas, which still accounts for 20% of its gas imports. /CNA
