Republicans introduce government funding bill/ Trump supports initiative

Republican lawmakers introduced a spending bill that aims to fund federal agencies through Sept. 30.

The 99-page bill provides a slight increase in defense spending while capping spending on other programs at levels below fiscal year 2024.

President Donald Trump hailed the measure as a “very good funding bill” and urged Republicans to pass it next week. He also warned that Democrats could try to shut down the government if it doesn’t pass.

The proposal has drawn opposition from Democrats, who want defense spending and other programs to increase equally. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has expressed a willingness to negotiate a bipartisan deal that puts workers' interests first.

He noted that the current bill could hurt funding for key programs, such as those for veterans and low-income families.

Congress must reach a deal by midnight Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown that would cripple public services and agencies.

Republicans, who hold a narrow 218-214 majority in the House, could face difficulty passing the bill if they lose the support of just two of their members.

In the Senate, where 60 votes out of 100 are required, at least seven Democratic senators must vote in favor if all 53 Republican senators support the bill. /CNA
