Germany's historic plan/ One trillion euros to strengthen defense

Germany has approved a historic plan that could see up to 1 trillion euros in defense and infrastructure spending over the next decade. The deal reached between Christian Democratic and Social Democratic leaders includes an increase in defense spending and a new fund of 500 billion euros for infrastructure investment.

The move could bring about major changes in Germany's fiscal policy. The measures are expected to be approved in the coming months. CDU leader Friedrich Merz said the decisions were necessary to protect the infrastructure of security and peace in Europe. Merz stressed that defense spending could not be postponed until after the latest decisions by the US administration.

Debt relief, which is part of Germany's constitution, will be exempted for military spending exceeding 15 percent of GDP. The change will give the government an opportunity to invest more in Germany's military strength at a time when security risks are rising.

This security plan comes after the recent elections, in which the CDU won by a huge margin and is now negotiating a coalition with the SPD. The strategy also provides a major boost to the German economy, which is in recession for the third year in a row.

The implementation of these constitutional changes and the lifting of the debt ceiling requires a 2/3 majority in the German Bundestag. Merz and SPD leaders have agreed to send an urgent motion to the Bundestag to allocate an additional 3 billion euros in military support for Ukraine./ CNA
