Reuters: US and Ukraine plan to sign minerals deal

The United States and Ukraine plan to sign the much-debated minerals agreement, after a tense meeting in the Oval Office.

Reuters reports that President Trump has told his advisers that he wants to announce the deal during his speech to Congress on Tuesday night. The deal was suspended on Friday after a tense meeting between Trump and Zelensky. The deal was one of the main points of the meeting between the two presidents.

According to Reuters, US officials have spoken with their counterparts in Kiev about signing the minerals deal. They have also reportedly asked them to persuade the Ukrainian president to publicly apologize to Trump.

On Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on the X platform that Ukraine is ready to sit down for talks as soon as possible to establish peace.

" Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go as it should have. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer ," Zelensky wrote.

It is unclear whether the agreement has changed. On Monday, Trump signaled that his administration remained open to signing the deal, telling reporters that Ukraine "should be more grateful."/ CNA
