Chaos in the Serbian parliament/ Tensions and injured MPs

Today at noon, the situation in the Serbian parliament was reported for the first time, where smoke grenades thrown by opposition MPs caused chaos and panic. From the new details, it is learned that Serbian opposition MPs lit fireworks inside the hall and threw tear gas.

The event took place during the opening of the spring session of parliament, in a sign of support for the anti-corruption protests.

At Tuesday's legislative session, after the ruling coalition led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) approved the agenda, some opposition politicians ran from their seats towards parliament speaker Ana Brnabic and clashed with security guards. Others threw smoke grenades and tear gas, with live TV showing black smoke billowing from inside the building.

At least three Serbian MPs have been injured.

Politicians were seen on live television clashing with security and throwing tear gas in an apparent show of support for student protesters.

One of the injured MPs suffered a stroke and, according to the Speaker, is in critical condition.

Demonstrations sparked by the collapse of a railway station roof that killed 15 people four months ago have morphed into a broader movement that poses the biggest threat yet to the Serbian government. /CNA
