US aircraft carrier visits South Korea; show of force against North Korea

The US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson arrived in the port of the South Korean city of Busan on Sunday in a show of force against North Korea, the South Korean navy announced.

This is the first US aircraft carrier to arrive in a South Korean port since the start of US President Donald Trump's second term in January.

The visit is part of the United States' "ironclad" commitment to show the readiness of the military alliance between Seoul and Washington against North Korea, according to Seoul's navy.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is part of the "Carrier Strike Group One" battle group, which also includes the battleships "USS Princeton" and "USS Sterett".

"It is clear that our presence here in Busan demonstrates the strong alliance between the Republic of South Korea and the United States and our ability to train and operate alongside our allies," said Michael S. Wosje, the battle group commander, on Monday.

"Every opportunity we have to sail together and fly together makes us stronger," Commander Wosje added while speaking to the media.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test launch of missiles from ships last month and ordered a state of full readiness to use nuclear weapons, according to state media.

This marks the first time a US aircraft carrier has visited South Korea since June, when the USS Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Busan to participate in joint military exercises.

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson last visited Busan in November 2023.

Pyongyang has regularly condemned the deployment of such US military assets in South Korea. President Trump held an unprecedented meeting with North Korean leader Kim during his first term.

The US president has said he will contact North Korean counterpart Kim again, although communist North Korean state media has not commented on the suggestion and has continued to condemn what it sees as a major security threat posed by Washington and its allies. /VOA
