New Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carey/ The Economist Who Will Succeed Trudeau

Mark Carney, 59, an economist by profession, will be Canada's next prime minister after winning the race to lead the federal Liberal Party. Carney is a former central banker who oversaw the response to the financial crises in North America and the United Kingdom.

Mark Carey has said he will resist the trade war with the US.

 

"America is not Canada. And Canada will never be America's, in any way," Carney declared.

Outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the Liberals he was "terribly proud" of his successor.

It is not yet clear when Mark Carey will take over as prime minister. Justin Trudeau and the new Liberal leader are expected to hold talks in the coming days to determine when the current Canadian prime minister will step down.

Carney received 85.9% of the vote, beating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Karina Gould and former MP Frank Baylis.

The 59-year-old will be the second Canadian prime minister in history who does not hold a seat in parliament. He will also be the first Liberal premier from Western Canada./ CNA
