China's Defense Minister "disappears", no information from the

China's foreign ministry on Friday sidestepped questions about the defense minister's whereabouts, amid speculation that the recently promoted general is under investigation.

Li Shangfu, who was appointed defense minister in March, has not been seen in public for more than 2 weeks. The Financial Times reported late Thursday that the US government believes Li is under investigation, citing US officials. 

The Wall Street Journal reports that Li was questioned last week by authorities. 

Meanwhile on Chinese government and military websites, Li is still listed as defense minister, state adviser and member of the party's powerful Central Military Commission (CMC).

Asked about Li's situation at a regular news briefing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said: I am not aware of the situation.

Li's disappearance also comes weeks after a sudden shake-up in the Chinese military. 

In July, the People's Liberation Army suddenly replaced two leaders of its Missile Force - an elite military branch that oversees the arsenal of nuclear and ballistic missiles.
