Taiwan tells Elon Musk it's not for "sale"

Taiwan has told US billionaire Elon Musk it is not "for sale" after he said the island is part of China.

"Listen, Taiwan is not part of the People's Republic of China and certainly not for sale," said Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

At a business summit this week, Musk compared Taiwan to Hawaii, calling it an "integral part" of China.

Beijing considers Taiwan to be part of it, and tensions between the two countries over these claims have risen significantly in the past year.

Just this week, China conducted air and naval exercises around Taiwan, which have now become routine.

Taiwan has said it has identified more than 40 Chinese military aircraft and about 10 ships in its waters.

This is not the first time that Musk, who has business interests in China, has angered the government in Taiwan over his comments.

In October, he suggested that tensions between Beijing and Taipei could be resolved by giving China control over Taiwan.

He then said in an interview with the Financial Times that he believes the two governments can reach "reasonable" agreements./ CNA
