International Criminal Court opens field office in Kyiv

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has opened a field office in Kiev to help it investigate war crimes in Ukraine following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, CNN reports .

Announcing the move in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday, ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan said the war was a moment of great responsibility for the Court, which required persistence and consistency.

"We need to show that the basic standards of humanity matter," he said.

Khan was speaking alongside Ukrainian Attorney General Andriy Kostin, whose office says it has collected evidence relating to more than 100,000 war crimes and crimes of aggression committed by Russian soldiers. Both men also said they were looking to add cyber attacks and environmental crimes to their war crimes caseloads, which Kostin said was something "never done before."

In March, the ICC issued war crimes arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's Commissioner for Children's Rights, in connection with the alleged forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, but there are no expectation that the Court will be able to receive. for anything other than a fraction of the total number of cases.
