UN: Libya's rivals are coordinating rescue efforts after floods

Libya's two rival governments are coordinating search and rescue efforts for flood victims, the United Nations has said.

More than 5,300 people have died after two dams burst, causing deadly floods in the eastern city of Derna.

At least 10,000 people are missing and tens of thousands more have been displaced from their homes.

A UN official has said that the two governments have requested international assistance and that they are coordinating with each other.

The Libyan teams are looking to survive in the city of Derna along with teams from Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Italy and Spain.

Red Cross teams in Libya have described the situation on the ground as if there had been a major bombing and an earthquake at the same time.

Since the overthrow of leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been divided between two rival governments, which have been involved in several conflicts.

Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah leads the Government of National Unity in Tripoli and enjoys the support of the United Nations.

Osama Hamad, prime minister in the east, leads a rival administration known as the House of Representatives.

However, many people believe that the real power in this wing is held by General Khalifa Haftar, who leads the Libyan National Army./ Rel
