China becomes the first country to appoint an ambassador to Afghanistan

China has become the first country in the world to officially appoint its new ambassador to Afghanistan since the Taliban took power.

In Kabul, the new Chinese ambassador presented his credentials on September 13.

The Taliban have yet to be formally recognized by any foreign government, and Beijing has not indicated whether the appointment of the ambassador signals steps toward formal recognition of the Taliban.

"This is a normal rotation of China's ambassador to Afghanistan and aims to continue the advancement of dialogue and cooperation between China and Afghanistan," China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"China's policy towards Afghanistan is clear and consistent."

The Taliban administration's foreign ministry spokesman told Reuters that the new envoy, Zhao Xing, is the first ambassador any country has sent to Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, after international forces - led by The United States – withdrew from the state after 20 years.

China's previous ambassador to Afghanistan, Wang Yu, took up the post in 2019 and completed his term last month.

There are other diplomats in Kabul who hold the post of ambassador, but they had taken this position before the Taliban came back to power.

Other countries and institutions, such as Pakistan and the European Union, have sent senior diplomats to Afghanistan to lead diplomatic missions, and they have the post of "Charge d'affaires", which means they are not obliged to submit their credentials to the local authorities, as they should in the case of ambassadors./ REL
