Confirms DASH/ USA will release five Iranian prisoners
Secretary of State, Antony Blinken

New details have come to light regarding the exchange of prisoners between the United States and Iran. In a statement sent to VOA late Monday, the State Department acknowledged it would exchange five Iranian prisoners. According to press reports, Secretary of State Antony Blinken notified Congress about the agreement in question. The United States and Iran confirmed on August 10 that under the deal, Tehran would release five American citizens who Washington has said were wrongfully detained.

"The United States has agreed to allow the transfer of funds from South Korea to restricted Iranian accounts at Qatari financial institutions and the release of five Iranian nationals held in the United States to enable the release of five American nationals detained in Iran," a State Department spokesman told VOA.

Environmentalist Morad Tahbaz is among five individuals with dual US-Iranian citizenship who may be released from Tehran as early as next week.

Last month, the United States and Iran confirmed that under the prisoner deal, Tehran would release five American citizens who Washington has said were wrongfully detained by Tehran.

"Moving the Americans to house arrest is a positive step, but they have not yet returned to their homeland. We are following their situation closely. We are especially grateful to our Swiss partners for their support on the ground. Our efforts will not stop until Americans return to the United States and are reunited with their families," said Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

President Biden's administration has rejected critics' accusations of unlocking $6 billion frozen in South Korean banks as a reward payment to Iran.

Washington has said that Tehran will have access to the money frozen under US sanctions through a third party and can only be used for humanitarian purposes under the supervision of the United States./ VOA
