UN: Russia's actions have caused food prices to rise
The head of the UN for human rights, Volker Turk

UN human rights chief Volker Turk said on Monday that Russia's withdrawal from an agreement to export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea has caused food prices in developing countries to skyrocket.

Speaking at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Mr. Turk said that rising prices have made "the right to have access to food almost unattainable for many people."

He highlighted the huge damage the breakdown of the grain deal has caused in Somalia, a country long dependent on Ukrainian and Russian grain exports via the Black Sea.

The wheat agreement allowed Ukraine to export its grain through the Black Sea. Russia pulled out of the deal in July, complaining that a parallel agreement to remove barriers to Russian food and fertilizer exports was not being implemented.

Ukraine's military intelligence service said on Monday that Ukrainian forces have retaken control of several oil rigs off the coast near Crimea.

A post on the Telegram social media platform by the Ukrainian military said its special forces damaged a Russian SU-30 fighter jet and confiscated helicopter ammunition and radar equipment.

The Ukrainian military said Russia had seized the oil rigs in 2015 and used them for military purposes.
