Europol raises the alarm/ Underground criminal gangs in the EU circulate

A new Europol report has raised the alarm about the existence of underground gangs in the EU that circulate billions of euros.

The report analyzes all financial and economic crimes affecting the EU, such as money laundering, corruption, fraud, intellectual property crime and counterfeiting of goods and currencies.

The research shows that almost 70% of the criminal networks operating in the EU use one form of money laundering or the other to finance their activities and hide their assets.
More than 60% of criminal networks operating in the EU use corrupt methods to achieve their illegal objectives.

It is also reported that 80% of active criminal networks in the EU misuse legal business structures for criminal activities.

As for the criminal landscape in this area it is said to be fragmented, with key players often located outside the EU.

The techniques and tools used by criminals advance quickly, as they take advantage of technological and geopolitical developments.

"Financial and economic crime and its proportions are a corrosive force in society. Europol and the European Financial and Economic Crime Center are part of the solution. This report sets out the increasingly sophisticated methods of organized crime and the successes of European law enforcement in the fight against it. If EU member states work together even more closely in this fight, we can achieve great results," said European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson. / CNA
