Police in the Netherlands arrested thousands of climate activists over the weekend after they closed a major highway two days in a row.
About 10,000 activists blocked the A12 highway leading to The Hague for several hours on Saturday, according to the mayor's office. Police arrested around 2,400 people at that time.
Hundreds of protesters did so again on Sunday, when police arrested another 500 people.

Extinction Rebellion activists were protesting against the Dutch government's subsidies to fossil fuel companies, as they have been doing for the past few months.
According to a report published earlier this week by the Center for Research on Multinational Corporations, these subsidies amount to about 37.5 billion euros ($40.2 billion) each year.
"The seas are rising and so are we," shouted the crowd.
Police fired water cannons at protesters on Saturday and Sunday as they defied demands to open the road.
They also dragged individuals to clear the highway.

Authorities said the activists had previously been given permission to protest and were asked to hold the demonstration at the nearby central station. The Mayor of The Hague, Jan van Zanen, approved the clearing of the highway, but also said that demonstrators were welcome to continue in authorized protest areas.
