The US and Vietnam warn against "threats" in the South China Sea

The United States and Vietnam warned on Monday against "threats or use of force" in the disputed South China Sea, days after the latest clashes involving Chinese ships.

US President Joe Biden and Vietnam's Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong have said claims over strategic waters should be settled according to international norms.

Beijing claims that almost the entire sea is its own - through which trade worth trillions of dollars a year takes place - has ignored an international court ruling that says China's position is unfounded.

"The leaders have underlined their unwavering support for a peaceful resolution of the dispute, in accordance with international law, without making threats or using force," Biden and Trong said through a joint statement.

They have also called for "freedom of movement and trade without hindrance in the South China Sea".

This statement was issued a day after Biden and Trong signed an agreement to deepen cooperation, which was seen as a way to combat the growing influence of China in the region.

Washington has disagreements with Beijing on a host of issues, including trade, security, human rights and climate change, and is therefore trying to increase its network of allies against Beijing's influence.

Vietnam fought with China in the period 1979-1988.

Last week, the Philippines accused China's Coast Guard and "militia" ships of disturbing two coastal ships that were being supplied by Philippine troops.

China constantly patrols the South China Sea with hundreds of ships.

Manila has said that China's Coast Guard constantly blocks Philippine ships in disputed waters./ Rel
