Colombia, the country with records in the production of cocaine / UN on alert

Colombia reached a record high last year in terms of cocaine production.

This was announced by the United Nations Organization (UN) in a recently published report.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said the potential production of cocaine had increased by 24% since 2021.

The leaves of the coca plant are the main ingredient in cocaine, and Colombia has long been a major producer of the illegal drug.

The area planted with cocaine plants increased by 13%, and the largest increase was recorded in the border areas of Colombia.

Almost two-thirds of the crops are found in the provinces of Nariño and Putumayo, which border Ecuador, and in Norte de Santander, on the border with Venezuela.

There has been a 77% increase in coca cultivation in Putumayo, which shares a border with Peru and Ecuador.

Colombia is the world's top cocaine grower, producing 60% of the world's cocaine, followed by Peru and Bolivia.

President Gustavo Petro on Saturday called on his regional counterparts to move away from a militarized approach to combating drug use and instead see it as a matter of public health./ CNA
