In a record-breaking operation, the Colombian Armed Forces seized the largest shipment of cocaine of 2023 near the San Andrés archipelago with a load of three tons, which was discovered on a boat suspected of heading to Central America. 

The operation was carried out by air and sea units, including the naval aviation patrol and the missile frigate ARC Caldas.

The pursuit began after authorities received an alert about a suspicious boat sailing through the Caribbean Sea. After a long chase, the ship was captured 313 kilometers off the coast of San Andrés. 

The crew, made up of four Colombian men, were detained after surrendering. The boat was first towed to the Caldas frigate and then taken to port for further legal proceedings.

Upon inspection, authorities found 120 bags containing 2,994 blocks of cocaine hydrochloride. 

Authorities seized the boat and communication equipment.

By July 2023, the Ministry of Defense reports that 384 tons of cocaine and 218 boats used by drug trafficking organizations have been seized. Also, 41 tons of cocaine base were seized, which indicates an increase in cocaine-based shipments. This trend may suggest a trafficking strategy for drug crystallization at ports of arrival.

Despite the increase in cocaine cultivation to 230,000 hectares in 2022, the increase was only 13%. The national government's drug policy strategy focuses on increasing interdiction without attacking peasant growers militarily or legally./ CNA
