The EU accuses Kosovo of obstructing the normalization of relations with Serbia

"Today it was not possible to overcome the differences", said EU Foreign Policy Commissioner Josep Borrell after the meeting in Brussels with the Prime Minister, Albin Kurti and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, a meeting which was once again called a failure of next.

Borrell said that Kurti is not ready to give them more autonomy and create the Association of Serb-Majority Municipalities. But for this, Kosovo has come to an agreement in the 10-year dialogue with Serbia supported by the EU. Prime Minister Kurti had insisted in Brussels that before granting autonomy to Serbian municipalities in Kosovo, Serbia must recognize Kosovo, said Borrell.

The EU Commissioner for Foreign Policy has stated that he has proposed to Kurti and Vucic to develop plans for the Association of Serbian Municipalities and the recognition of Kosovo in parallel. Concretely, Borrell's proposal was that once the establishment of the long-negotiated Association begins, Serbia would begin the steps to recognize Kosovo. But unfortunately Kurti has insisted on recognizing Kosovo as a first step, Borrell said, while Vucic accepted this proposal.

Borrell warns against the state of stagnation

Borrell warned both sides of the stalemate and that it will hinder the desired EU membership. "Without normalization neither for Kosovo nor for Serbia will there be a European future," Reuters quotes the EU Commissioner, Josep Borrell. Thus, the last meeting in Brussels with the mediation of the EU did not bring any success even after several hours of negotiations.

Prime Minister Kurti responded after the reaction from the EU and accused the EU of partiality and that it has made Serbia's position its own. President Vu?i?, for his part, asked for the talks to continue. "We need to talk and find a way forward," Vucic said.
The German media have also covered the meeting on Thursday (September 14) in Brussels, and emphasize the failure to reach an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo for the normalization of relations. "The efforts of the EU to escalate the great tensions between Kosovo and Serbia failed again", writes the ZDF online portal. And Deutschlandfunk writes that "the EU's attempt to mediate between Kosovo and Serbia was again unsuccessful"./ DW
