French elections: What will happen if no party secures an absolute majority?

The French are voting today in the first round of early parliamentary elections, called by President Emmanuel Macron about three weeks ago. Polls show that the far-right National Alarm (RN) may win without securing an outright majority. According to data from foreign media, participation by noon was higher than expected and appears to be bucking the trend of recent years.

What happens in this case, while political paralysis can be avoided after the elections, the second round of which will be held on July 7?

The short answer is that no one can answer the above question with certainty. Article 8 of the Constitution provides that the president appoints the prime minister, but without specifying the criteria for his appointment. On a practical level, French President Emmanuel Macron should be expected to offer the premiership to the party that has a leading position in parliament. This party, according to the polls, will be the Eurosceptic, anti-immigrant party of Alarm Kombëtar./CNA
