Pope Francis has expressed his desire to visit Nice, Ecumenical Patriarchate (now Iznik) in Turkey in 2025, on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council, the Vatican news site reported.

"It is a journey that I desire with all my heart to make," the 87-year-old pope said Friday as he welcomed a delegation from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which was in Rome for the feast of Peter and Paul, the founders of the church in Rome.

It is a ceremonial visit that the Catholic Church returns with a visit to Constantinople for the feast of Saint Andrew on November 30, who according to tradition founded the church in Constantinople.

He also expressed his satisfaction that the Ecumenical Patriarchate is working to celebrate the anniversary and thanked Patriarch Bartholomew for his invitation.

If Pope Francis manages to visit Turkey in 2025, it will be his second trip to the country, after 2014, when he made a three-day visit to Istanbul and Ankara.

The Council was held in Nicaea, an important religious center during the Byzantine period, in AD 325, with the participation of more than 300 bishops from various parts of the Roman Empire.
