US presidential candidate Donald Trump delivered a speech in front of his supporters on Friday, addressing them in triumphant tones, after the first debate with President Joe Biden.

Addressing thousands of supporters at a campaign rally in Chesapeake, Virginia, Mr. Trump said Democrats don't have a better choice.

"The question every voter should ask themselves is not whether Joe Biden can survive a 90-minute debate, but whether America can survive having Joe Biden at the helm for another 4 years" , Mr. Trump said.

The former president's remarks came a day after Mr. Biden's disappointing showing in the debate has fueled concern among voters and his allies who were hoping that Mr. Biden would be more energetic and boost his chances of re-election.

Mr. Trump said he did not believe Mr. Biden would drop out of the race, citing calls from some Democrats and some analysts for President Biden to withdraw. He criticized high-profile Democrats such as California Gov. Gavin Neesom, Vice President Kamala Harris and former first lady Michelle Obama.

He said he would be very happy if he faced Mrs. Harris, who is running alongside Mr. Biden in this presidential campaign./CNA
