Compared to a year ago, the purchase of firearms in the US is decreasing, and this trend is confirmed by the latest data, according to which more than five million guns were purchased in the first four months of this year.

The Hill reports that in 2023 total sales were down four percent compared to 2022 to 16.7 million, while this year the sales volume could decrease even more.

Firearm sales peaked in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, heightened political unrest and a divisive presidential election.

According to an analysis by the non-profit organization SafeHome, although the numbers are down so far this year, the upcoming presidential election is a factor in the increase in sales.

"For example, President Joe Biden's plans to restrict gun ownership by increasing background check procedures for potential buyers and banning assault weapons could increase demand for guns, as buyers anticipate such laws if he wins office the second", says the analysis.

The states with the highest gun sales are Texas, Florida and California. That trio accounted for 22 percent of purchases so far this year, the top states in the nation in gun purchases per capita were Montana, Wyoming and Alaska, with 1,586 guns sold for every 10,000 Montanans over the age of 21.

North Carolina, Illinois, New Hampshire and Florida saw the only increases in gun sales between 2022 and 2023. Interestingly, Illinois tightened its gun laws between 2022 and 2023, but purchases grew by about five percent annually.
