Powerful storms and torrential rains that battered France, Switzerland and Italy this weekend have left five people dead, authorities said on June 30.

Three people in their 70s and 80s died in France's northeastern Aube region on Saturday when a tree fell on the car they were traveling in as the country was hit by strong winds.

The fourth passenger is in critical condition, local authorities told AFP news agency.

In Switzerland, two people died and another is missing after torrential rains triggered landslides in the country's southeast, in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, police said.

According to local media, the two victims were women who were on vacation in Switzerland.

Bad weather has also left some areas without electricity in Switzerland.

Also last week, Switzerland faced torrential rains that left one person dead and caused extensive damage.

In northern Italy, in the Aosta Valley, major flooding was reported due to overflowing rivers.

Scientists say that climate change, driven by human activities, is increasing the severity and duration of extreme weather, such as floods and storms./ REL
