The heavy missile attack/ Zelensky again asks for long-range weapons: We are

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated his new call for more long-range weapons and air defense after a missile attack killed seven people, including two children.

The Russian attack in the city of Vilniansk, near the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, also wounded 31 others, Ukrainian officials said. In total, at least 11 civilians were killed and 37 others wounded in rocket attacks across Ukraine on Saturday, Reuters reported.

"Our cities and communities suffer every day from such Russian attacks," Zelensky later reacted. He added that there were "ways to overcome this", including "destroying Russian missiles, striking with real long-range capabilities and increasing the number of modern air defense systems".

Western allies have already supplied Ukraine with a number of long-range weapons - including Scalp missiles from France, Storm Shadow missiles from the UK and ATACMS from the US - as well as US-made Patriot air defense systems.

However, the flow of arms from the US, Ukraine's biggest arms supplier, faltered in early 2024 after a bill in Congress that would have provided for further military aid was held up.

The legislation was finally passed in April, and air defense systems and long-range missiles were coming to the front lines the following month. But Ukraine says that the lack of ammunition and delays in the delivery of weapons have aggravated the balance of victims and the acquisition of as much territory as possible by Russia./ CNA
