Vucic: Tectonic changes in the north of Kosovo
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, said that during the extraordinary local elections held on April 23 in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, "tectonic changes have taken place".

"Yesterday, the Serbian people showed that they demand a completely different approach, first of all from the international community, and first of all I am referring to the Western powers," Vucic told reporters on April 24.

He also said that the elections represent "the failure of the regime of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti".

"Under one, the elections of April 23 are the election debacle of Kurt and QUINT", declared Vucic, referring to the group of countries that includes the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy.

"Under two, this is a historic result because it has never happened on European soil. Under three, this showed the great unity of the Serbian people, the discipline and responsibility of the Serbs, which has not been seen in the modern history of our nation."

According to Vucic, the April 23 elections were a "referendum" for Serbs living in the north, to "show who they don't want in the north of Kosovo."

In the elections for the new mayors of North Mitrovica, Leposavi?, Zvecan and Zubin Potok, no Serbian parties participated, but only one independent candidate.

Lista Serbe - the main party of Serbs in Kosovo - in addition to not participating in the elections, also called for their boycott.

The turnout in the elections was slightly more than 3 percent, and two municipalities were won by the candidates of the Vetëvendosje Movement and the leadership of the other two was taken by the candidates of the Democratic Party of Kosovo.

The municipalities in the north remained without mayors since November last year, when the Serbian officials of this area resigned from all institutions, due to a plan by the Government of Kosovo to replace the illegal Serbian license plates with those of Kosovo.

The Serbian leader accuses QUINT of favoring Kosovo

Vucic also spoke about the dialogue with Kosovo, which is mediated by the European Union.

He said that "there is no substantial dialogue at all", accusing the QUINT countries of favoring Kosovo.

"We don't talk. We receive imposed letters that must always be in favor of Pristina, because QUINT is like that, it supports the independence of Kosovo more or less, but it is always in their favor", stated Vu?i?.

Vucic, along with Kurti, are expected to meet on May 2, in the new round of dialogue, which aims at the complete normalization of relations between the two countries. The draft statute of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority is expected to be on the agenda of the meeting. The establishment of this Association is presented as a condition for the return of Serbs to the institutions of Kosovo./ Rel
