The USA again expresses regret for the non-participation of Serbian parties in

The United States again expressed regret that Serbian parties did not participate in the local elections in northern Kosovo, which were held on April 23.

According to the preliminary results, the Vetëvendosje Movement won the race for mayor in North Mitrovica and Leposaviq, while the Democratic Party of Kosovo won in Zveçan and Zubin Potok.

In addition to the election of new mayors, citizens also voted for the new composition of the municipal assemblies in Leposaviq and Zveçan.

"We support a diverse, inclusive and multi-ethnic democracy in Kosovo and the elections that support it. It is unfortunate that not all parties used their democratic right to participate in today's elections. Participation in elections helps ensure that leaders are representative of the population they serve. Voting is an important freedom of democratic societies", it was said in the announcement of the American Embassy in Pristina.

The US also said it welcomes the efforts of the authorities in Kosovo to administer the elections, so that citizens can exercise their right to vote "reducing potential points of tension".

"We will continue to engage with all relevant parties on the next steps," the announcement said.

Lista Serbe - the main party of Serbs in Kosovo - did not participate in the elections and called for a boycott of the election process.

Out of 10 candidates for mayors, only one was from the Serbian community.

After the end of the election process - which passed without any incident - Lista Serbe said that the Serbian people in Kosovo "will never allow" that the Serb-majority municipalities in the north of the country are led by those who have won "1 or 2 percent of votes" in the election.

The Central Election Commission said that the turnout in the election process was 3.47 percent.

The CEC opened 19 voting centers in the four municipalities in the north, 13 of which were alternative, located in containers./REL
