USA, a new wave of Republican candidates is expected to enter the race for

So far, attention on the primary election for the Republican presidential candidate has focused mainly on the growing differences between former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

But after a months-long lull, a new wave of Republican candidates is expected to enter the race, possibly as early as next week.

Among them will be Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, who will officially launch his campaign on Wednesday.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has said he will announce his plans in "weeks, not months." He has had a busy schedule with early visits to the American states while discussing with his aides to announce his candidacy possibly in May or June.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Sott, who has formed a committee to consider running for president, is expected to enter the race around the same time.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been meeting with his aides and returned this week to New Hampshire, where he said during a public meeting in the state, where the first primary election in the United States is taking place, that "today is the beginning of the case against Donald Trump". Mr. Christie has said that he will make a decision "in the coming weeks".

The candidates will enter the race at a vital time, as Mr. DeSantis, who has yet to officially announce the start of the campaign, is struggling to live up to the sky-high expectations of some of his early supporters. He has lost support to former President Trump among elected Republican officials in his home state and has raised concerns within the party that his stances on abortion and LGBTQ rights, among other issues, could make him impossible his victory in the election.

In recent weeks, former President Trump has consolidated his status as the front-runner, even as he faces criminal charges in New York.

Other Republican hopefuls include former UN ambassador and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who announced their candidacies in February.

There are still many unknown dynamics, including whether other governors, such as South Dakota's Kristi Noem or New Hampshire's Chris Sununu, will enter the race. Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin have also not ruled out running.

President Biden is expected to announce his 2024 presidential campaign possibly as early as next week. He faces minimal competition in the race to receive the nomination of the Democratic Party./VOA
