The President of Greece approved the request of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to dissolve the parliament and hold early elections on May 21. The mandate of Mr. Mitsotakis' government was expected to officially end in July.
Parliament is expected to be dissolved on April 23.
The elections come after the shock caused in the country by the collision of two trains that left behind dozens of victims.
The Greek prime minister met with the president today and officially submitted the act proposing the dissolution of the parliament.
Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou said she hoped the pre-election process would be smooth and fruitful.
Polls so far show that neither the New Democracy party of Mr. Mitsotakis nor the opposition Syriza party are expected to receive enough votes to secure a parliamentary majority./VOA
