The Red Cross and the Red Crescent organizations have observed in recent months a major deterioration in the condition of refugees who pass through the Balkans and the Mediterranean route.

The Federation of the Red Cross and that of the Red Crescent, the IFRC have appealed to the governments of the countries on the Balkan and Mediterranean route as well as to the European ones to improve the mechanisms of rescuing refugees.

"We cannot ignore the tragedy of the lost, the untold pain and the avoidable deaths," said Ezekiel Simperingham of the Federation, responsible for migration. "All countries must, with a coordinated, integrative and non-discriminatory plan, ensure the necessary humanitarian support for people who take the path of migration," the dpa news agency quoted Simperingham as saying.

Migrants are unable to speak after severe experiences

The Red Cross has hundreds of refugee treatment points in several countries in the Balkans, in Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia to provide first aid to refugees. Food, medicine and hygiene items are provided there.

Mobile teams also move to difficult regions to provide assistance to people who often find themselves in dire situations. In the Mediterranean, the helpers of the Red Cross together with the humanitarian organization SOS Mediterranee have saved thousands of people from drowning in the open sea.

Only on Thursday (20.04.), 29 people were rescued, who were in a small raft in the Mediterranean, said Sara Mancinelli about this rescue mission.

In addition to first aid with water and food, humanitarian organizations also offer psychological assistance. Many migrants are unable to speak after the difficult experiences on the migration path. Some show clear traces of torture on the body. For many of those coming from the camps in Libya, crossing the Mediterranean is the only way to survive./ DW
