Taiwan's Defense Ministry said Monday that a group of Chinese warships, led by the aircraft carrier Shandong, is about 222 kilometers off the island's southeast coast, the same ship that took part in China's war games around the island earlier this month.

Taiwan's armed forces are closely tracking the warships and are "responding appropriately," Taiwan's defense ministry said.

During exercises earlier this month, China broadcast footage of the Shandong aircraft carrier and fighter jets taking off from its launch pad.

In March 2022, Shandong sailed through the Taiwan Strait, just hours before the Chinese and American presidents were due to meet for talks.

China considers democratically governed Taiwan part of its territory and has increased military pressure in recent years to try to force the island to accept Chinese sovereignty.
