The chief executive of Anglo-American mining company Rio Tinto claims his company and its controversial multibillion-dollar plans to build Europe's biggest mine in Serbia are the target of a "very well-designed and organized" campaign. of disinformation.

Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm appears to have used the Serbian media outlet Politika to counter recent public protests over the project over fears it will cause further environmental damage in Serbia.

"The issue of project development confuses, worries and divides people," he wrote, according to the Beta agency, adding that "our workers are exposed to threats and harassment on the Internet," without specifying what threats they are.

The Serbian president, Aleksandër Vucic, has long supported the Rio Tinto project, which is located in Jadar, as he has argued that it will create jobs.

Vucic and representatives of the Tio Tinto company last week in a public forum answered questions regarding the concerns of the public in Serbia about this project.

Vu?i?'s ally, Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vu?evi?, then vowed that his government would make written commitments about the safety of the project before allowing the project to go ahead.

Rio Tinto says the mine's potential capacity of 60,000 tonnes a year of lithium could meet a fifth of the continent's needs, where the market for batteries for electric cars is booming.

The company has repeatedly said it will operate the mine safely and adhere to environmental standards.

Protests across Serbia erupted after the Constitutional Court overturned a decision by the previous government that refused to grant some permits in 2022, paving the way for Vu?i?'s promise to ensure the completion of the Jadar mining complex.

Environmental groups and other local groups accused Rio Tinto and the Government of ignoring their concerns./ REL
