Central Europe is bracing for the worst flooding in years

Central European states have made intensive preparations, as there are predictions that the region could face the worst floods in decades.

Parts of the Czech Republic and Poland were said to record 400 liters of rain per square meter in four days, while Austria and Slovakia could record up to 200 litres.

Cultural events planned for the weekend have already been postponed in four states due to Cyclone Boris.

Poland is expected to record torrential rains in the south of the country.

Meanwhile, the Czech Minister of the Environment, Petr Hladik, said that the situation in his country "may be similar to what we experienced in 1997 and 2002".

In the floods of 1997, the region of Moravia was badly hit - where torrential rains are expected to be recorded these days too - killing 50 people and causing billions of dollars worth of damage.

The 2002 floods hit parts of the west of the state, killing 17 people and causing even more damage than in 1997.

In the cities of the Moravian region flood barriers have been installed, and sandbags have been prepared.

The Austrian TV channel ORF has said that the heavy rains may affect the water level of the Danube River to mark the biggest increase in the last five or 10 years.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said on Wednesday that the army is ready to deploy 1,000 soldiers over the weekend, if needed.

The Slovak army and firefighters are also on alert to respond.

If the predictions for Slovakia turn out to be true, the rainfall will be even more intense than that of 2013, which, in the world, has been considered something that happens once in 1,000 years.
