At least 34 killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza

At least 34 people have been killed, including 19 women and children, health officials in Gaza said during the Israeli strikes.

Israel carried out overnight airstrikes across Gaza, including on September 11 attacking a United Nations school housing displaced Palestinians, as well as two homes.

The deadliest attack occurred on Wednesday afternoon, when the UN school, Al-Jaouni, in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza was hit. The Israeli military said it targeted radicals from Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

The Israeli army claimed that they were planning to carry out attacks from inside this school. This Israeli claim could not be independently confirmed.

At least 14 people were killed in the attack, including two children and a woman, whose bodies were taken to Avda and Al-Aqsa hospitals, hospital officials said. At least 18 other people were injured.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians who have been displaced from their homes by the Israeli offensive live in schools in Gaza. The al-Jaouni school is one of many schools run by the UN agency for Palestinians. Many of these schools have been the target of attacks since the war in Gaza began in October.

Israel often bombs schools, saying they are used by Hamas, which it blames for civilian casualties from airstrikes, as it argues the group's fighters operate inside populated areas.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping nearly 250 others. As a result of the Israeli offensive, at least 41,084 people have been killed in Gaza and 95,029 others have been injured, the Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Wednesday./ Rel
