North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said that Pyongyang will increase its arsenal of nuclear weapons, state news agency KCNA reported.

Kim has said that North Korea's stockpile of such weapons must grow exponentially.

"We are perfectly implementing the policy of building up the nuclear armed forces and increasing the number of nuclear weapons through a geometric progression," Kim said, according to the KCNA agency.

Kim has accused "hostile" forces of planning to attack North Korea with nuclear weapons, without specifying the names of those countries, and without providing any evidence.

According to the Stockholm-based International Institute for Peace Research, North Korea currently possesses about 50 nuclear warheads, although the exact number is unknown.

This country is extremely isolated, due to international sanctions, related to the weapons program and the nuclear program of this country.

The last nuclear test was conducted in 2017.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen in the past two years as Pyongyang has increased the number of missile tests it has conducted while toughening its rhetoric against the United States and South Korea.

Pyongyang has also intensified military cooperation with Russia./ REL
