11 victims and nine missing. This is the tragic balance of the floods in southern Morocco. The news has been confirmed by the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior for the French news agency "AFP".

One of the people who lost his life does not have Moroccan citizenship, but no details about his identity are given.

17 prefectures and provinces in southern Morocco were hit by strong storms, causing flooding. Seven people lost their lives in the province of Tata and two in the province of Errachidia.

The Moroccan authorities clarified that this is an "extraordinary" weather phenomenon in the area. "The amount of rain measured in two days is equal to the amount that normally falls in the region during an entire year," said a Moroccan government spokesman.

In Ouarzazate province, 47 millimeters of rain fell in three hours. In Tagounite, near the Algerian border, 170 millimeters have fallen, according to the Moroccan meteorological service.

The floods destroyed 40 houses and damaged 93 roads. Drinking water, electricity and telephone networks have been severely damaged.

Over the past few days, heavy rains have hit normally dry areas of southern Morocco and Algeria, causing flooding.

The unusual rainfall occurred due to "extremely unstable tropical air masses," the head of Morocco's meteorological institute told AFP./ CNA
